LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIM TASK, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM THAT TO THE FINAL PRODUCT?
Starting the preliminary task was fairly difficult. We were given the genre of Documentary and decided we wanted to implement some aspects of horror into it. We decided to base it on a real life story and narrowed it down to female serial killers. The actual plot we had chosen was quite easy and straight forward to do but the actual planning and the fitting of the plot to the genre took some time.
We struggled to create a visual and straightforward story board and the shooting schedule. We did eventually create a storyboard we can work off and plan a schedule.
We also struggled with settings for the task. We did not plan in advance what settings we would need for our task, therefore we had to improvise and use whatever room we could. Consequently the settings do not fit with our story our the period the story was set, for example there is a fire alarm on the wall when the narrative is set in the 1900s.
The filming of the prelim task was quite straight forward. We had to include certain shots, for example shot reverse shot. We kept the rest of the camera work fairly simple changing between using a tripod and hand held camera.
For the editing of the prelim task, we kept it quite simple just turning the flashbacks into black and white to emphasis that the time the plot was in was in the past. We did not add any wacky transitions because it took away from the story.
Overall I was quite happy with the final footage. It fitted the genre we were given and we told the key parts of the story that we wanted to tell. For one of the first editing tasks we had done, the editing was up to the standard we wanted and the final piece came out well, If I was to do it again, I would plan in more detail in advance, for example the setting.
Panaphobia is the final film opening. The idea for the narrative was quite easy to think off, We wanted to create a teenage drama but with different twists, for example a montage. We came up with the idea of a missing girl, and the opening of the film would be a montage of her life and the friendships she had. We created 3 characters, Erin Blake (Missing girl), Isla Hall and Amber Hocart (Erin's friends). We wanted these 3 characters to be relatable to our target audience of 15+, therefore we planned in advance the costumes of the character.
We wanted to create a relatable narrative, so we planned our settings and needed props/costumes in advance. We decided to film the montage in both an arcade and a school. We decided to film in a school because it is an everyday setting for most teenagers therefore our target audience can relate to it more.
We created multiple storyboards, one on prezi powerpoint and two on paper that include the different camera shots we were going to use and the duration the clips would last for. We also booked the places we wanted to film, for example we contacted Chelmsford Tenpin Bowling to ensure that we could film on their premises.
We filmed the footage hand held to create a sense that the footage was being filmed on a phone by the teenagers, therefore creates a first hand experience of the friendship for the viewer. We also used disposable cameras to take pictures and write the titles on the back of them.
We edited quite a lot of the footage. For the titles, we wrote them on the back of the disposable camera pictures and burnt them. In editing we reversed this shot to reveal the titles out of the flames. We had to then speed up the footage by 1000% to ensure the flames burnt quickly on the footage. We also changed the colouring and brightness of the footage, for the montage we made the lighting warmer to reflect the happy atmosphere and for the come home plea the lighting was bright and contrasted to the warm atmosphere therefore creating a harsh atmosphere.
Compared to my preliminary, the planning and research was more in depth and that consequently lead to a better constructed and well finished final clip. We found out that the planning was really important to get a good final piece. The planning needs dedication because every aspect needs to be planned out to ensure success. Editing was also improved. The editing was of a higher skill in our finished footage, and the time we took on this also led to a better, more rounded finished piece.
The finished film opening was of a way higher standard than the prelim task, and that is down to the planning and the longer time spent dedicated to this task.
Overall, I am pleased with my finished product. It reached the standard level I wanted and ticked all the boxes of looking professional and being appealing to my target audience. If I had more time to film it again I would change some of the script, for example "snapchat us",because whilst it brings the footage into present times it also distracts from the seriousness of the narrative.
