Coursework - Third shoot

Our third filming session was Saturday 26th November at my house. We decide to use this setting because it provided a stone patio which was suitable for the burning of the photographs. We stated filming at 5pm because it was dark outside and would therefore enable the camera to pick up the flames well. We had to use a torch to shine onto the photographs so they could be seen on the camera. We had to angle the torch to ensure there was no glare on the photo.
We used a lighter to burn the photos.
We hand held the camera so had to make sure that our hands were steady, this proved difficult at times because sometimes the burning lasted a long time and our hands would grow tired.
We also had to be sensible with the lighters because fire is a risk.

Coursework - Second shoot

Our second session of shooting was on Thursday 24th November at Chelmsford Tenpin Bowling Arcade. We used this location because it was the nearest arcade to us and was free entry. We originally planned to film at Southend arcades but this turned out to be a too expensive journey.
When we arrived at Chelmsford arcade, it was empty which worked best for us because it was easier for us to get the shots we wanted quicker.

We used a Sony Cybershot camera, because the resolution of the camera was high and created a really good image. We filmed various shots of us 3 playing in the arcade on this camera.

We also took a disposable camera with us and took pictures of the arcade and then us. We planned to use these photos to write our titles on and then burn them.

Not all the pictures taken on the disposable camera turned out well, only 8 out of 21 photographs turned out well. If we were to do this again we would ensure the lash on the disposable camera is on to ensure good lighting.

Coursework - First shoot

Our first session of shooting was on Monday 21st November in Amara's bedroom. We used this location to film our Come Home Plea. We used this location because it provided the biggest space, and it had a homely feel. As Amara is playing the part of the missing girl, it makes sense to use her bedroom so it relates to her more.

We used a Nikon camera. We used this camera because it had low resolution which made the footage looked home filmed and original. We wanted this effect because we were filming a Come Home Plea and we wanted it to look realistic.

We set the camera up on a tripod near the biggest window in the room to get natural light. We did turn on the main light in the room which created a warm atmosphere to the room. We had a problem wit the camera and the tripod. The camera would not sit properly on the tripod stand. We rectified the problem by putting a quality street underneath the camera which held it in place.

Coursework - Script

This is the script we used for the voice over.
We pre planned the script because we wanted the script to sound well done and planned.

Coursework - Missing Poster

This is the missing poster we used for our film opening.
To get the design of the poster, we researched genuine missing poster and took the layout of them and put it onto our poster.
For the pictures, we went onto Amara's social media and took pictures either taken by herself or photos she has been tagged in. This made the poster look more home like and genuine.
The contact details at the bottom (telephone number and email address) are real contact details. We decided to use real contact details to make he poster more authentic.

Coursework - Risk Assesment

RISK                              HAZARD                                                   PREVENTION

Fire                                Setting self (hair alight)/ Burning              Tie hair back, handle with safety,                                                                                                                have water nearby, watch clothing

Night time                     Trip hazards                                               Be sensible, use torches

Heavy equipment          Potential strains/injuries from falling       Be sensible, help each other, lift                                                                                                                properly (lift with knees not back)

Coursework - Panaphobia Mood board

This is a board of images, that represent different aspects of our film opening.
We have taken inspiration from these images and the camera work and applied it to our own film opening.
The images shown here represents the atmosphere we want to create. The images of arcades and the sea front represent the happier and uplifted atmosphere whilst the fire and burning of the photos capture the enigma and slight dangerous atmosphere.

Coursework - More Influences

This first clip is an influence because it uses hand held camera work which creates a home footage feel to the clip. It allows the audience to relate more to the event happening because it allows them to have see a first hand experience of the event.

This film was an influence because the narrative of the clip was a group of young adults on a day out to an arcade and just having fun travelling around from place to place. We liked this because it created a care - free feel to the clip and we wanted to show this feeling in the start of our film opening.

Mark Scheme

Film Title: CONNECT FOUR
I would mark it at a high band 3, possibly 47 marks.
This is because it was original and the titles were unique and clear to see. There was controlled camera work shown and good editing, therefore creating a well finished piece.
The setting and characters also fitted well into the theme.

Film title: DOUBLED
I would mark at a middle band 3, possibly 42 marks
The story line was good, but no the most original.  The sound track was really good and fitted in with the genre and theme well.
The camera work was slightly shaky but overall well done.

Coursework - Film Opening Planning - Influences

When looking for ideas for our film opening, we found this video.
The video uses a reverse effect to create interesting shots and it intrigues the audience.
We decided to take the idea of reverse cam and put it into our film opening,

We decided in our film opening that we would burn photographs. Due to this clip's influence we decided to film the burning photographs in a reverse effect. This creates an interesting shot and make the titles of the film more interesting for the viewer to watch.

Another influence was the film Gone Girl. This film is about a woman who fakes her own murder but blames it on her husband.
The film intrigued us because the idea of a missing person is an original idea and it can involve lots of different genres and it can be manipulated into fitting most narratives.

Another influence for the film was American Honey. This is a new film, that evolves around a girl joining a group of people and traveling the country selling magazines and getting into trouble.
We liked this influence because it shows the more harsh side of running away and how people can be twisted into people they are not when facing different/traumatic experiences.

BFI Media Trip

The media trip to the BFI was really influential because it allowed me to gain more knowledge about different type of films, such ad Independent and Mainstream films. It also highlighted distribution and marketing of films.
Speakers from mainstream and independent production and distribution companies also furthered the knowledge about the institutions of films.

Prelim Final Task

Final video of Prelim task.

Evaluation:
Overall I think that the finished piece is a success. The footage is long enough to keep the viewer watching and has an interesting story line.

If it was to be done again, on the storyboard I would write exact timings for the shots because some of the shots filmed weren't long enough so had to be slowed down.
The camera was not the highest quality, and sometimes the sound was an issue - after each shot there was a click of the camera closing.

Prelim Task

For the Prelim task we were put into groups and had to pick out a genre. I was put into a group with Jess and Jamie and the genre we picked was Documentary.
The initial thought was of difficulty but after some thought and research we decided to do the documentary about serial killers because this enabled us to involve aspects of horror and thriller.
We did some research into the most famous serial killers of all time. We found some horrific stories but the one that stood out the most was the story of Leonarda Ciancuilli - The Soap maker of Correggio.

http://www.the-line-up.com/9-female-serial-killers/

This link shows the website that told the stories of the female serial killers and told the story of Leonarda Ciancuilli. Leonarda was an Italian female serial killer who murdered 3 women between the years 1939 to 1940. Once she killed the women, she boiled the bodies down to soap and made the blood into cakes which she fed to our neighbours.
This interested us because it was different from the usual serial killer stories.

We decided to use the story and adapted it to our documentary. We wanted a reconstruction of the story with a voice over of the facts about her life.

After the research we created 2 storyboards. One of the storyboards was a storyboard of the reconstruction and what parts of Leonarda's life we were going to show.

The second story board highlights the camera shots for each scene. We wanted to combine different shots in the task.

After the research and storyboards were created, we decided to plan in depth the scenes and write out a improvised script. The script showed the conversation between scenes and how the scenes would flow with the characters involved.

We then made a list of what props/costumes were needed for the task. We did this because we wanted to plan correctly and in depth what was needed to make the task successful.

We also created a Production Diary. This included details of what work was done and how long it took.

Juno Opening Scene

We studied the opening scene of Juno and were put into groups to recreate the scene.

The first steps of planning the filming of Juno was analysing the opening scene and creating a storyboard.
On the storyboard it had step by step analysis of the opening clip. It included camera shots, effects and sounds included. The storyboard was simple in design but included pictures of how the shots were to be filmed.

If I had to improve my storyboard, I would of added timings for the shots. For example, how long the shot had to be filmed.

After the storyboard was complete, we did the casting in the group and decided who would be filming and editing. I was chosen to play the part of Juno (the only character in the scene), and the other two members (Jamie and Josh) decided to do the filming and the editing.
For my character, I needed a costume of a red hoodie, jeans, trainers and a milk cartoon to drink from.

We started to film the starting shots on a camcorder but soon changed to filming them on the iPhone because we found that the quality of the film was better on the iPhone.

After the filming was done, we used Premier to put together and edit the clips. We put an effect on part of the clip to make it have a cartoon effect.
We then uploaded the finished clip onto YouTube.
